There are some people who are okay with having cellulite. They accept it for the normal occurrence that it is and have no problem wearing short-shorts or a bathing suit. (The rest of us envy you.) Then there are those who dread the thought of exposing their dimpled skin, and go to great lengths to either hide it or get rid of it.

If you happen to fall into the latter camp, keep reading as we take a look at the various ways you can reduce the appearance of cellulite.

First of all, a quick definition: Cellulite is that lumpy, orange-peel like skin that typically occurs on the buttocks and thighs, though it can also appear on other parts of the body. You don’t have to be overweight to have cellulite – it can affect even the slimmest and fittest among us. Cellulite can also get worse for women as they age, thanks to a lack of estrogen which has a role in circulation (lower circulation = less oxygen to the area = lower collagen production = fat deposits become more visible).

So, what can you do about it?

Rethink your diet. Cutting back on sugar, unhealthy fats (sorry, pizza!) and foods that are high in sodium can help make cellulite less apparent.

Increase your water intake. When your skin is dehydrated, it can emphasize the appearance of cellulite.

Regular exercise. The more weight you’re carrying, the more fat you have that can be converted to cellulite. Exercising regularly will help you lose excess fat and reduce cellulite.

Treat the affected areas to a massage. Massaging areas where you have cellulite helps smooth skin by increasing circulation and encouraging lymphatic drainage. Incorporate lotions and/or creams into your massage routine that are specially formulated to help treat cellulite.

Try a body contouring treatment. A non-surgical alternative to liposuction, body contouring treatments can help tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of cellulite. Treatments like BodyFX™ use radio-frequency energy to heat fat under the skin and stimulate the creation of collagen.

While you may not be able to get rid of cellulite altogether, applying some or all of these techniques can go a long way in reducing its appearance and increasing your self-esteem.
