Ask Christina: Should I Be Using A Face Serum?
July 30th, 2018 7:57pm
While it’s not critical to include a face serum in your skincare routine, your skin can definitely benefit from it.
For one thing, serum hydrates your skin without adding extra oil. They’re lightweight and unlike your moisturizer, serums have smaller molecules so they can be absorbed deeper into your pores. But that doesn’t mean you should ditch your moisturizer! Serums are meant to complement moisturizers, not replace them.
Active ingredients in serums (like hyaluronic acid, vitamin c and vitamin a to name a few) can help clear acne-prone skin, reduce inflammation and fade hyperpigmentation. Check the ingredients though, as some serums can aggravate conditions like eczema and rosacea.
You can use a facial serum in morning, in the
evening or both – just don’t overdo it. Since serums are highly concentrated, a
small, pea-sized amount can go a long way. Serum should only be applied to
clean skin so be sure to give your face a good wash first. Apply that pea-sized
drop by patting it gently into your skin. Wait a couple of minutes to allow the
serum to absorb into your skin, then follow up with your favourite moisturizer
