What is a Skinceuticals™ Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a procedure considered by many as a staple in maintaining and restoring great skin texture and appearance. It is performed by a skin care professional that generally involves using an acidic component to exfoliate layers of the skin. Chemical peels inflict controlled damage thereby triggering the healing process of the skin until the skin’s appearance is improved. Generally, chemical peels are used to treat various skin concerns including blemishes, fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, and uneven skin tone.

What are the types of Chemical Peels and What Do They Treat?

There are various types of chemical peels that address different skin concerns. The type of peel determines the strength of the peel. Stronger peels are generally performed under the direction or supervision of a skin care professional.

As we plan together which chemical peel is best for your skin goals, you may want to be equipped with comprehensive knowledge of the different chemical peel types out there so that you’ll be familiar with all your options. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions and/or to check the availability of treatments. Please note though that we avoid making recommendations until we’ve assessed your skin type in person.

Superficial Peels

Also known as lunchtime peels, these are chemical peels that don’t reach further than the epidermis layer of your skin. Common superficial peels include Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) and Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs).

Alpha Hydroxy Acids are the mildest of all chemical peels. These acids can be derived from citrus, sugar cane, milk, and even grapes. They are usually recommended for the treatment of mild pigment irregularities and acne, very fine lines, and dry skin.

Beta Hydroxy Acids are commonly derived from citrus fruits and willow bark. They differ from Alpha Hydroxy Acids because they are lipid-based (oil-loving). This characteristic allows these acids to penetrate deeper into the skin as they attach to the skin’s natural oil. This type of chemical peel is great for oily, congested, and acne-prone skin. This chemical peel clears up whiteheads and blackheads and has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Medium Peels

A step up from superficial peels in terms of strength, medium peels could reach up to the top parts of the dermis, the deepest part of the skin.

Jessner Peels are a combination of resorcinol, lactic acid, and salicylic acid in an ethanol solution. This type of peel can be used as a superficial peel or medium peel, but more often used as the latter type. Resorcinol helps to direct the acids deeper into the skin. This chemical peel is best used to even out skin tone, reduce dark patches and age spots, smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, reduce hyperpigmentation, and treat melasma.

Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) is frequently used as a medium peel and is available in various different concentrations. This type of peel is best for sun damage, major pigment irregularities, and deeper wrinkles and acne scars.

Deep Peels

These are the strongest peels available and should be only administered by a physician. These peels can reach up to the lower parts of the dermis. Local anesthetics may be administered to reduce discomfort. Usually, these types of chemical peels need pretreatment weeks before the procedure to prepare the skin and to maximize the skin’s healing.

Phenol, otherwise known as carbolic acid, is one of the strongest and most commonly used chemicals for a deep peel. This type of chemical peel is best for acne scarring, severe photo ageing, deep wrinkles, dyschromia, freckles, seborrheic keratoses, and more.

What is the Downtime for Chemical Peels?

The downtime needed depends on the type of chemical peel you will get. Superficial peels do not require any downtime but light peeling may be noticed on the skin. Meanwhile, medium and deep peels have a recovery time of two to three weeks.

If you plan to get a chemical peel before an important occasion, make sure to schedule accordingly.
